QUESTION: Before finding the thesealedportion.com, I had been introduced to supposed translations of the records from the people who followed Hagoth (as mentioned at the end of the Book of Alma). These can be found at www.mentinah.com. Are these real scriptures as well? Is there any more you can tell us about them?
ANSWER: (From Christopher) There is not one iota of truth in the Mentinah records as published by Phillip R. Landis. Landis studied American Indian culture and was raised with a Mormon background, thus come the content of his writings, which fall short in comparison to real truth. He fell away from the mainstream LDS faith like many others before him and many others will after him, believing they have been called of God to do some special work. Landis has attempted to create value for himself with a complete fabrication and invention of his own mind.
For the record, the Hagoth of the Book of Mormon had nothing to do with and was also never personally acquainted with Moroni, the captain (who died before Hagoth took off in search of other lands). Upon reading Landis’ work, one quickly realizes that he has taken more modern (compared to ancient beliefs and customs) American Indian customs and beliefs and attempted to incorporate them into a contrived fable about Hagoth. Except for in the Book of Mormon, none of the traditions held by the Nephite and Lamanite people around 60 B.C. (circa the time Hagoth left the Americas) were ever recorded, nor were they carried on after Christ came and changed their entire way of thinking and acting. The ceremonies, traditions, and simulated American Indian relations in Landis’ book are far from anything the Nephite and Lamanite people practiced or were accustomed to in their ancient time.
Probably with good intentions in his own mind, Landis made a feeble attempt to unite the American Indians with the history of the Book of Mormon. He failed, however, because he was never called to do so by the proper authority, nor has he once told the truth about himself and his work. (See Priesthood Authority and What Makes You So Special? and Why Are You So Arrogant? for more information.)
For those who think Landis’ record has any semblance of truth, or who believe that Landis or others ever had any record kept by the Nephite and Lamanite ancestors, here’s your challenge: Arrange a symposium where I can be present with Mr. Landis and his record. We will debate the issue and let the “Holy Ghost” of those present decide the truthfulness. I am sure that Mr. Landis will never agree to such a debate, especially if he has read any of the real truth presented in this work. However, the offer stands. All one would need to do is meet Mr. Landis in person and ask him a few questions about reality and see if he makes any sense. He will make absolutely no sense when it comes to unfolding the mysteries of God, of which he knows very little, unless he has read the books of this work.
The ultimate key in discerning the truth of any work a person presents as truth is whether or not the person knows and understands all the mysteries of God in their fullness and can explain them so that they make sense. No matter what the work, no matter who the man or woman claims to be, if he or she does not have a complete and full understanding of the mysteries of God, the work of that man or woman can be unconditionally certified as false.
The ONLY way to prove if a person is a “true messenger of God” or not is to see if the claimant can give “the sign and token received in the Garden of Eden.” This is the TRUE and ONLY test! And if he or she gives you a Mormon temple handshake as proof, that person has no understanding whatsoever of the mysteries of God or of any truth.
Phillip R. Landis is a minister of “Lucifer.” His works are the works of “Lucifer.”
